For accordion and percussion

After my piece Zuria for solo accordion, written for Iñaki Alberdi, I have worked on a new piece in which the accordion part is expanded through very primitive instruments (there is no traditional percussion instrument in use, but some specific materials with its own resonance) that beautifully envelops and energizes the accordion sound in its refined yet primal material.

Zuria means "white" in basque. This cycle of pieces (the third will add a txistu, a traditional basque flute) are steeped in the thought and poetics of Eduardo Chillida, and go further in my personal connection with this instrument –the accordion- that interests me so much and for which I have already composed countless compositions in the last twenty years. The piece was commissioned by the city of Wroclaw, in Poland, which was the European City of Culture in 2016, and was played in the spaces of a great exhibition with works by Chillida.
