L'art de la fugue, Contrapunctus 5
Composer:
Johann Sebastian Bach
A musical genius who brought the Baroque period to its grand conclusion, Bach composed L’art de la fugue at the end of his life. It is a collection of seventeen fugues and four canons based on the transformations of a single theme. This unfinished work contains no indication of instrumentation, though it is very often performed on the organ.
The guiding idea of L’art de la fugue (Die Kunst der Fuge) is an in‑depth exploration of the contrapuntal possibilities of a simple musical object. Each of the fourteen fugues (except the last, left unfinished) develops the same subject in D minor, disarming in its simplicity.
