Calligrammes
(**Commissionned by Lithuanian Composers' Union
In 1918, Guillaume Apollinaire published Calligrammes, a collection of poems characteristic of their graphic and spatial structures, where the arrangement of words on the page held as much significance as their meaning. In my composition, I draw inspiration from this visual dynamism of Apollinaire’s Calligrammes, transforming their graphic forms into free-flowing sonic events. At the same time, fragments of his poem Zone are embedded within the piece. In Zone, Apollinaire used a montage technique to depict a daylong journey through Paris. My aim was to explore the interplay between the graphic precision of the calligrams and the unrestrained poetic flow of Zone, merging these opposites into a seamless musical narrative.
