Georgia Spiropoulos

(1965 - )

Born in Athens, Greece, Georgia Spiropoulos studied classical piano, harmony, counterpoint and fugue in Athens and worked as a performer and transcriber of Greek aural-tradition music. She moved to Paris in 1996 where she studied composition and electroacoustic music with Philippe Leroux, form analysis with Michael Lévinas and computer music at IRCAM (with Jonathan Harvey, Tristan Murail, Brian Ferneyhough, Marco Stroppa, Philippe Hurel and Ivan Fedele) and at the “Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences” (EHESS, Paris) with Marc Chemillier, Pierre Judet de la Combe and Francis Zimmermann.
She won the “Villa Médicis Hors les Murs” prize for the USA and she has been made Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic.
Georgia Spiropoulos has been working as a composer-in-research and collaborates regularly with IRCAM, who organized a concert-portrait of her at the Pompidou Center during the Manifeste Festival 2015. She is a Distinguished Visiting Chair in Music (Composition) and Acting Director of the Digital Composition Studios in 2017-2018 at McGill University.
She has received many commissions (IRCAM-Centre Pompidou, the French Ministry of Culture, the Baden-Wurttemberg Ministry of Culture, the French Radio, the Sacem, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, “Marseille Capital of Europe 2013”) and has been performed internationally (Centre Pompidou, Cité de la Musique, IRCAM, Louvre Auditorum, Symphony Space in New York, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Radial System V Berlin, Gasteig München in Munich, AOI Concert Hall in Shizuoka, Felicja Blumenthal Music Center and Hateiva Hall in Tel Aviv, Concert Hall of the Academy of Music of Krakow, Onassis Cultural Center in Athens) and by numerous ensembles, choirs and soloists (Ensemble Intercontemporain, the San Fransisco Contemporary Music Players, L’Itinéraire, 2E2M, Ars Nova, Aventure, Nikel, Smashensemble, dissonArt, Sixtrum, Accentus choir, Habanera, Prism and Quasar saxophone quartet).
