Most of the material for Marcia Funebre was composed in 2020 during the first and deadliest wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Montreal. The piece was completed in the winter of 2021.

I composed this piece with the tragedy we were collectively experiencing in mind, but also as a tribute to the health care workers who became the heroes of this trying time through their exceptional dedication.

The piece is inspired by a rich collection of archetypal musical gestures, characteristic topoi belonging to this specific genre and developed throughout the history of music.
