Frédéric Le Bel

(1985 - )

Frédéric studied musical composition in Montreal, first with Philippe Leroux at the University of Montreal, then with Serge Provost at the Montreal Conservatory of Music, before specializing in computer-aided music at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (Ircam) in Paris where he completed the two courses in composition and computer music as well as a PhD focused on the development and integration of intelligent algorithms by and for sound creation.

As a composer, Frédéric has also participated in several international composition academies such as the Impuls Academy in Austria and the Manifeste Academy in France. His music has been awarded several times in various national and international competitions such as the Groundswell Emerging Composers in Canada, the Stichting Masterclass Apeldoorn in the Netherlands and the Pablo Sorozabal in Spain. It has also been performed at various festivals such as the New Music Darmstadt festival in Germany, the Matera Intermedia festival in Italy, the Klang festival in Denmark and the Cluster New Music + Integrated Arts festival in Canada to name a few.

As a computer music designer, Frédéric has collaborated with several artists such as Raphaël Cendo, Martin Matalon, Philippe Hurel and Yan Maresz, not only to perform works from the mixed repertoire, but also to develop a variety of software applications dedicated to composition and performance, as well as creating a number of works in various contexts such as the Curso Internacional de Composición IF-BMP with the Barcelona Modern Ensemble as part of the Mixture festival at the Fundació Phonos of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF ) in Barcelona.

At the same time, Frédéric also taught computer-aided music at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid (RCSMM) in Spain and at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne (HEMU) in Switzerland. His work has focused on the composition, analysis and interpretation of mixed music by blending theory and practice on topics such as audio synthesis and sound design, signal processing, sound spatialization and systems for man-machine interaction.

Since his return to Montreal, he has worked mainly independently as a composer, computer music designer and sound engineer for various organizations and ensembles specializing in contemporary music such as the Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec, Le Vivier, Chants Libres, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Sixtrum percussion ensemble, Paramirabo ensemble, Quasar saxophone quartet, Bozzini string quartet, Totem Contemporain and Duo Airs to name a few.

Sincerely passionate about research, creation and teaching, he actively continues to put his knowledge and know-how to the benefit of the continuity and development of the artistic discipline.
