Matthew Huang Mailman

(2005 - )

A native of Hershey, PA, Matthew Huang Mailman (b. 2005) is a composer currently based in Evanston, IL. Essential to his artistic practice is the use of found, often mundane, sounds, then abstracted to varying degrees. He seeks to explore the use of mathematical and computational processes in this abstraction process in an intuitive way to express lived and deeply personal experiences.

His works have or will be performed by the Orkest de Ereprijs, Tacet(i) Ensemble, Quasar Saxophone Quartet, Kodachrome Saxophone Quartet, The Big SU Saxophone Quartet, Northwestern University’s Contemporary Music Ensemble, Yeil Park, and Ian Antonio, among others. He has been featured at festivals such as the Ostrava New Music Days (CZ), IntAct Festival (TH), Young Composers Meeting (NL), Arizona State University’s PRISMS Contemporary Music Festival (AZ), Heidelberg University’s New Music Festival and Symposium (OH), and CAMPGround26 (FL).

He is a 2026 recipient of the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composers Award and has additionally been recognized by the Foundation for Modern Music and The American Prize. Matthew currently studies at Northwestern University with Jay Alan Yim, Ania Vu, Jessie Montgomery, Alex Mincek, and Kelley Sheehan, pursuing both a BM in Music Composition and a BA in Cognitive Science with a minor in Artificial Intelligence.
