Born in Guanajuato Mexico in 1984, Andrés Gutiérrez Martínez is a composer as well as an electronic music performer. He began his music studies in his hometown then moved to Austria to continue his training at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory and subsequently at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. In March 2022, he completed the PhD program in music Composition at the University of California San Diego. Andrés’ music output in recent years show a wide range of approaches focusing on timbral exploration and gradual transformation (timbral, gestural, textural), which is achieved through the use of the extended sonic possibilities of the music instruments. The use of live-electronics is an important element of Andrés’ work as a composer and performer. His music has been performed by international ensembles such as Divertimento Ensemble (IT), Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart (DE), Schallfeld Ensemble (AT), Platypus Ensemble (AT), Ensemble Intercontemporain (FR), Low Frequency Trio (MX), and Line upon Line Percussion (US) in Mexico, Europe, The US, and South Korea, in festivals and Workshops such as Festival Internacional Cervantino, Foro Internacional de Música Nueva Manuel Enríquez, Voix Nouvelles in Royaumont, Impuls Festival and Academy, International Summer Courses at Darmstadt, ManiFeste, Encontre International de Compositors, and Daegu Festival for Contemporary Music. He’s a founding member of Schallfeld, an ensemble devoted to the performance of contemporary music in Graz, Austria. Andrés is currently an ACTOR Output Innovation postdoctoral fellow at the Schulich School of Music.
