Sonia Paço-Rocchia

The Québéc-European Sonia Paço-Rocchia has a diversified practice ranging from composition to interactive kinetic sound installation, including web art and improvisation. If the theatrical and visual aspect is an integral part of her work, the sound research which is at the heart of it can be seen in the exploitation and widening of the sonic palettes of the instruments, as well as in the use of unusual instruments, both found and invented. Being a professional coder herself, new technologies flow smoothly into her work. From digital violin making to raw violin making, she manufactures her own interfaces, real-time sound processing software and instruments. A talented improviser, she plays solo or in small ensembles: unconventional and invented instruments, vocals, and bassoon - all with real-time processing. She is bassoonist-improviser of the London Improviser Orchestra and a member of the duo of multiple trumpets with electroacoustics and realtime processing VibraLib and the duo ZzCc for ensemble of automatons, augmented piano and real-time processing. She particularly enjoys collaborations and has made music for dance, theatre and visual art. Her works have been presented in over a hundred events across Europe and North America.

In 2017, she held a residency at StudioXX to create her live web coding platform for cyberperformance Said, the creation of Nouvelle vie, nouvelle ville, the port symphony for Montreal's 350th anniversary, for brass quintet, égoïne, égoïnes à siges*, real-time processing in quadraphonic, trains, boats and basilica. Two installations at FIMAV included a commission: Tubes, a sound, kinetic and interactive installation, a semi-generative composition for 14 automated tubes*. She was commissioned to create a sound installation of the Interstices course, for the 150th anniversary of the Confederation, Daïmôn, Hull, that being
Lames for automated musical saws of 3 meters*. The performance during TIES of Lames, was for automated round saw blades*, égoïne, égoïnes à siges*, and metal harp*. The digital storytelling performance [Play;] (experimental poetry, video art, electroacoustic music, digital violin making), a collaboration with Toulouse author and video artist Sandrine Deumier, was performed at L'Espace cercle carré. L’interactivité pour Sentier Sonore, a research and creation project funded by the territorial agreement of CALQ and the Laurentians, and the presentation of Hélix, her interactive sound installation of automated helixophone *, instruments made of Slinkies, which was presented at the new Verdun cultural center from December 21,2017 through February 11, 2018.
