Benjamin Scheuer
(1987 - )
Benjamin Scheuer’s music is fashioned from sensuality and humour. His stage and concert pieces have theatrical elements and often evoke a darkly coloured playing mood. In his works, found objects from everyday life are frequently presented on stage — either live or sampled: Scheuer does not see himself as a composer of electronic music, but instead focuses on a world of “live- electrics” in which sounds are produced with the simplest and most economical means possible. His principal interest is human beings playing music with their individual characteristics and their tendency to err, while technology only serves as a tool. Benjamin Scheuer studied in Hamburg and Karlsruhe; among his teachers is Wolfgang Rihm. Each year, his compositions are performed by renowned ensembles in many countries. In 2012, his work Zeitraum was premiered by 600 musicians at the football stadium in Hannover. His “Notfallkonzerte” [emergency concerts], held from 2012 to 2014 in public spaces, were a small and modest attempt to save the world with the music of today. Benjamin Scheuer lives and works in Hamburg as a freelance composer. He is a founding member of Musicians Without Borders (MoG) and travels regularly to Ecuador as a volunteer music teacher.
