The music in Refractions alternates between intense, fast moving actions and a contrasting lack of musical progression. The music switches between meeting the listener’s expectations and going contrary to them; sometimes chords and motives stick in a frozen, static state, unsuccessfully trying to move on. The music evolves through different sections where the listener's relationship to time and musical flow is affected.
Refractions I for violin and piano was premiered at Kulturhuset in Stockholm 1996. Refractions IV was premiered at Uppsala Konsert & Kongress 2017.
