The Year in Music (article excerpt)
The winner in 2010 for the category of experimental music is Montréal’s QUASAR sax quartet. Their Edmonton program included acoustic works and pieces with electronics written for them by the composers from across the land, all played with such aplomb, as well as with such incredible interpretive maturity and technical prowess, one can but wonder whether there are any limits to QUASAR’s mastery. Their renditions of the young Edmontonian Colin Labadie’s excellent “Mojave,” Iannis Xenakis’ super-difficult “XAS,” and Frank Zappa’s quirky “Zomby Woof” were all freakin’ breathtaking. Pure gold.
